Lawyers for frozen and closed cryptocurrency exchange accounts.
When a cryptocurrency exchange freezes your account, blocks withdrawals or closes it without explanation, you still have rights. Crypto Law Hub's crypto lawyers help individuals and businesses get answers, release their cryptocurrency and, when needed, bring claims against the platform.
Legitimate lawyers and exchanges never charge a fee to “unlock” an account. If someone asks for one, stop and verify.
Why cryptocurrency exchanges freeze accounts.
- Identity checks — incomplete or expired know-your-customer (KYC) documents.
- Anti-money-laundering reviews — activity flagged as unusual, including large or fast cryptocurrency transfers.
- Tainted funds — deposits that blockchain analytics link to hacks, scams or sanctioned wallets.
- Sanctions screening — possible matches against OFAC or other sanctions lists.
- Legal process — a subpoena, seizure warrant or court order from law enforcement or a litigant.
- Terms-of-service issues — alleged violations of the platform’s user agreement.
- Platform distress — withdrawal halts at a cryptocurrency exchange facing insolvency.
Exchanges are sometimes legally barred from explaining a freeze, for example when a suspicious activity report has been filed. Silence does not always mean bad faith, but it should not last indefinitely.
What our crypto lawyers do.
- Diagnose — we review your account history, the platform’s notices and its user agreement to identify the likely reason.
- Resolve directly — we prepare a complete response to the exchange’s compliance team, with source-of-funds documents and blockchain records where needed.
- Formal notice — most cryptocurrency exchange user agreements require a written notice of dispute before arbitration. We send it correctly and on time.
- Regulatory complaints — where the exchange is licensed, we file with the right regulator, such as NYDFS for New York-licensed cryptocurrency platforms.
- Arbitration or court — if the platform will not release your cryptocurrency without a valid reason, we bring the claim in the forum the agreement requires.
- Tainted-fund defense — if you are accused of receiving illicit funds, we document where the cryptocurrency came from.
What to do right now.
- Do not move funds around — avoid repeated support tickets or opening new accounts to move funds.
- Save everything — keep every email, notice, chat log and screenshot from the platform.
- Export your records — download your cryptocurrency transaction history and note the wallet addresses for recent deposits.
- Do not pay “unlock” fees — legitimate lawyers and exchanges do not charge release fees.
Frozen account questions.
- How long can a cryptocurrency exchange freeze my account? There is usually no fixed limit; it depends on the user agreement and the reason. Reviews often take days to weeks. Freezes tied to legal process can last much longer.
- Can I sue a crypto exchange? Usually through arbitration, since most user agreements require it. Some agreements allow small-claims court, and claims against a failed cryptocurrency platform may go through bankruptcy proceedings.
- Will the exchange tell me why my account was frozen? Not always. Some reasons, such as law enforcement requests or suspicious activity reports, may be confidential by law.
- Does it matter if the exchange is offshore? Yes. Offshore cryptocurrency platforms are harder to reach, but U.S.-facing operations, banking partners or affiliates can create pressure points.
